Project 3 (Final Project) / Cinemagraph - Self-Titled

For our final DPI project, we were required to create an animated poster of ourselves based on the Theme: Self-Titled. Self-titled is an exploration project for the students to express their own individuality and reflect their personality into digital art self-expression. The main idea is to build up self-confidence and discover their interests.

I first started with Idea Development, where we had to write a short biography about ourselves, followed by a statement for our work.

SHORT BIO

INTRO

My name is Asma’. I am 22 this year, and I’m in second year Mass Comm student at Taylor’s University.

PARAGRAPH 1

As a child, my favourite past time was to be buried in the pages of a book. I’ve always loved fictional worlds, with fantasy being my favourite genre of all. I also adore the magical realism genre, which is the blending of magic into our everyday world.

PARAGRAPH 2

While my tastes have always leaned on the more whimsical side, it’s something that I’ve only actually fully embraced in recent years, as when I was younger, I had a fear of my tastes being too childish or “girly”, and I was determined to prove otherwise. Now though, I’m determined to embrace all the things which I love, whether its flowers or fairytales or anything else I adore.

SUMMARY

I’m a bit of a dreamer, and I love flowers, fairytales, and dreamlike landscapes.

WORK STATEMENT

INTRO

I wasn’t really into the idea of taking a portrait style photo of myself, as I couldn’t find any inspiration on how I should draft up my design for the final product. The idea of using a prop seemed like a lot of fun though, so I decided to use my sister’s star-studded umbrella and utilise it in my photoshoot.

PARAGRAPH 1

Since the umbrella was covered in tiny white stars, I was rather fixated on a cosmic design for my overall poster and animation. However, I couldn’t think of innovative or creative ways to utilise stars or cosmic details into my design, so I decided to find inspiration elsewhere.

PARAGRAPH 2

Upon thinking about other things that I liked, I decided to go with flowers. I immediately thought about the garden scene in Alice and Wonderland, where Alice stumbles into a garden full of talking oversized flowers, and thought I would like to tap into a similar feeling to that scene. I chose some of my favourite flowers to incorporate into the scene, such as tulips, sunflowers, and camellias.

SUMMARY

I settled on my second idea, which was to use flowers as the main theme of my design.

We were then required to find inspiration for our piece before sketching out our ideas.

POSTER DESIGNING

Figure 1.1: Poster Design Draft 1

For my first draft, I thought that the colours looked a bit flat and didn't pop enough, and the clouds looked a little out of place.

Figure 1.2: Poster Design Draft 2

I liked my second draft better, but it still felt like something was missing. Since I'm holding an umbrella in the poster, I had the idea of flower petals raining down from the sky, so I added the clouds back in and inverted them.

FINALISED POSTER

Title: The Garden of Dreams

Artist Statement:
This poster stems from my love of flowers, and the joy they bring me. I’d love nothing more than to sit in a field of them and to just be surrounded by flowers. Much like Alice in Alice in Wonderland, I think it would be nice if I could dream a dream full of oversized flowers and a breeze filled with petals.
