Task 1 / Digital & Physical Collage

Week 1 - Pinterest Review

List down your 3 favourite graphic design work from Pinterest. Explain why you like the designs.

Design #1:

Vol.14 of MCU Commercial Design Journal

Description:

The design is simple yet manages to draw your attention. I like the use of contrasting colours, and how the use of the white in the centre and the compressed lines gives the design a sense of gravity, further emphasising how the figure is falling into some kind of cosmic hole or abyss.

Design #2:

Korean Movie 'Swing Kids' Promotional Poster

Description:

The poster isn't very flashy, but still manages to give off a fun and fresh vibe. I like how the placement of the text and the feet draws the viewer's attention diagonally, and the emphasis of the shoes gives viewers a hint of the movie's focus, which is tap dancing.

Design #3:

Airi Kuroda Pop Up Shop 'Hearteart Days' Poster

Description:

I love how bright and bubbly the colours are, and how it makes the poster really pop. I also like how the designer utilised texture to make it seem like the poster and graphics were knitted.

Week 2: Physical Collage Pre-Composition

1. Choose and identify your collage's design elements to be cut out and compose it into your own concept & story.

  2. Using the same Photoshop file, improvise your WEEK 3 digital collage into WEEK 4 by using Adjustment Layers & Filters on Photoshop.

  3. Explain what you’ve learned in the description section.

WEEK 3 - PEN TOOL EXERCISE (BEST COMPOSITION)

DESCRIPTION:

Using the pen tool, I cropped the images provided to select the parts that I wished to utilist in my composition, before arranging them into the arrangement above. The pen tool also made it easier to remove the background of images.

WEEK 4 (ADJUSTMENT LAYERS & FILTERS )

DESCRIPTION:

In this exercise, I learned how to apply adjustment and filter layers to my composition in order to colour correct and make the whole piece more vibrant and pleasing to the eye. In this piece, I adjusted the vibrancy, contrast and saturation. I also learned that different filters may also evoke different moods in a piece.

Week 5 - Photo Manipulation

For this exercise, we were given the task of editing Shazam into a photo of Hearst Mansion, before replicating the same result with our own photo.

PART 1: Shazam

PART 2: My Reflection

In this exercise, I learned how to colour correct by using the Colour Match tool on Photoshop. I also learned to pay attention to details (exp: shadow, reflections, etc.) as they are important in making an edited photo feel more lifelike and real.
